The holiday pet photo has become a tradition for a great many families. The set ups range from the simple elf hat, to the more elaborate costumes, Christmas scene, and a real live Santa Claus. Although some animals are calm about being dressed up and posed, not every pet is. I see countless photos of dogs with their ears back, eyes wide, and terrified looks on their faces and I thought ‘Self, what can I do about this?’ Holiday photos should be fun, not scary.
So I enlisted the help of my favorite holiday models; my dogs Vyv, Fergus, and Stitch, my horse Tanzer, and Fred the barn goat. All of whom have extensive knowledge and experience of this very subject after YEARS of being dressed up like elves, presents, reindeer, and even snowmen! With their tips, you and your pets can make great holiday photos that you will cherish for years to come.
Who’s that big scary guy? ‘Hooman kids know of this Sandy Claws and seem to like him, but we dawgs think heez one scarey dude. He gots big fuzzy white animal on face and makes lowd noises (wut is HoHoHo mean?). If yur dawg or kat usually scared of people, maybe Sandy Claws not best picture for them.’ ~ Fergus (Who LOVES his family, but is fearful of strangers and new situations.) [The big dog on the left.]
I can’t sit still! ‘Hey y’all, here’s the deal. I liv in tha country and pretty much do as I pleez. Each yeer this lady poots a thing roun’ my neck and then expect me to stand while she stares and giggles. I trys to walk away, but she keep laughin’ and starin’. By tha time she get don’, we gawn all tha way from the front stall to that back stall, all the ways across tha barn! I keeps sayin ‘Lady, I’s not one yur dawgs. I don’ stand here reel good’, but it don’ work, she do this every yeer!’~ Fred (who has been trained to touch a target with his nose, but not to stand still for a picture) [See the lucky picture below!]
You want me to wear THAT? ‘Each year, “The Girl” brings out ridiculous items, sticks them on my head, and then laughs as she flashes a light in my face. I am used to such nonsense after wearing immaculately designed clothing during my show years, however many poor animals never had the chance to live such a charmed life and may be uncomfortable in the current holiday fashions. Take the time to explain to your pet that although this reindeer outfit is not ‘haute couture’, once he or she is used to it, it will be taken off and they never have to suffer such indignantly again.’ ~Tanzer (who has retired from the heights of equine fashion, but still councils others on how to look good and feel good.) [Pictured in an undignified hat to the right.]
The sky is FALLING!! ‘I’m pretty sure that the world is out to get me and that each flash will be my last. I’m not sure why all of this stuff has come into my house, but it looks like it’s the start of the dogpocalypse and we won’t make it out alive. My bruthers seem okay, but they not worried about things like I am. I heard stories from my cousin Shilo that he barely made it after a trip to the ‘pitstoor’ to see the ‘sandy claws’. He says that there was lots of people and scary noises and he was afraid! I told him ‘I tell Antee Soo that you scared of that and us scared dogs are better to stay home for pichures’. ~ Vyv (Who is the sweetest and yet most anxious dog in the world.) [That’s him trying to hide behind his brothers!]
Yay! It’s picture day! ‘I’m SO EKSYTID for pikchures today! Is won of my favrit things too doo. Momma dress me up lyke polar bare and I sit reel pretty next to snow man. Last yeer I got to go meet the Santa Paws and I sats on his lap and gives him lots of kisses. Afters , he gived me cookies that were reel yummy! I meeted lots of new frends that also lyke to dress up an take pikchures and we may form club. Momma sez Ima good model and I shood do as profesnul, but I don’ know wat that meen .’ ~Stitch (Who is game for anything and everything all the time.) [Smooshed between his two brothers!]
May your holidays be merry and bright and your holiday photos adorable and stress free!
