Does your pet shiver and shake (or hide) at the sound of loud noises like fireworks, thunder, and train horns? Noise phobia is a common behavioral problem that is not just an issue for our pets, but for us too. Although some pets are scared of noises year round, others may only have a problem during certain times of the year. It’s not until we’re in the middle of that spring thunderstorm or Fourth of July celebration that we think “Uh oh, what do I do now?”
You may think that it’s too soon to start thinking about Spring and Summer, but now is the perfect time to start planning for this year’s noisy events. Starting now will give you ample time to begin implementing the desensitization techniques that will help your pet conquer (or at least tolerate) the sound of the sky falling. Having accomplished this with my own dog Vyvyan, I can tell you that you’ll be so happy the day that your dog hears a loud noise and turns to you, tail wagging, for a cookie. If you would like more information about noise phobias or would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Pachel to assess and create a treatment plan for your pet, please give us a call.
